Shinjuku Gyoen in Tokyo is a national garden managed by the Ministry of the Environment. Originally, it was a private space where Edo daimyo lord’s mansion was, and in 1872 the site was renovated and turned into a testing ground for researching agricultural and other technologies. It was in 1906 that the current name of Shinjuku Gyoen was adopted. Today, Shinjuku Gyoen is filled with carefully planted flowers and trees, as well as well-maintained gardens. The visitors can enjoy the expressions of the four seasons throughout the year. There are also greenhouses, Japanese gardens, cafes and restaurants.
Shinjuku is one of the buiest town in Japan with skyscrapers including the Tokyo Metropolitan Government office, and many bustling streets, so there are many people come and go 24/7. However, once you step into Shinjuku Gyoen, you will likely to forget that you are in Tokyo because of the wide open sky and beautiful scenery.
In this video, we also walked through an evening illumination event called “Naked Sakura Night Garden.” It is a special event that you can’t usually see since Shinjuku Gyoen usually closes at 18:00. Let’s take a quick walk together in magical Shinjuku Gyoen at night!
